There has been a signiﬁcant increase in passenger traffic at Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) over the past few years, as well as increased conﬁdence in and reliance on the aviation sector in Afghanistan. The international passenger traffic at HKIA increased at a 6.8 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2013 and 2017, with more than 1.3 million (M) Passengers in 2017, HKIA is forecasted to see 5.76 M international passengers in the year 2048. The new passenger terminal would enable HKIA to meet the growing demand for air travel services while fostering economic development for the country. The new passenger terminal will be developed in two phases. In phase I, the new passenger terminal should be at approximately 39,000 square (sq.) meters (m), with a capacity for 3.5 M passengers. In 2035, phase II should add approximately 19,000 more sq. m to accommodate traffic growth through 2048, to a total working area of 58,000 sq. m.
